How to Make Yogurt at Home

Yogurt is a nutritious dairy product made by fermenting milk with live bacterial cultures. It is rich in protein, calcium, and probiotics, which support digestion and boost gut health. Yogurt can be made at home using milk and a small amount of plain yogurt as a starter.

ย

The fermentation process transforms milk into a creamy, tangy treat that can be enjoyed plain or with added fruits, nuts, or sweeteners. It is a versatile and healthy addition to meals, snacks, and smoothies.

Homemade yogurt is fresh, delicious, and free of additives. Here’s an easy recipe:

Ingredients:
  • 4 cups (1 liter) of milk (whole or low-fat)
  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt with live cultures (as a starter)

Instructions:
  1. Heat the Milk
    • Pour the milk into a saucepan and heat it gently over medium heat.
    • Stir occasionally to prevent burning. Heat until the milk reaches about 180ยฐF (82ยฐC) or until it begins to steam and form small bubbles around the edges.

ย  ย  ย  ย  ย 2. Cool the Milk

    • Remove the saucepan from heat and let the milk cool to about 110ยฐF (43ยฐC).
    • You can speed up the cooling process by placing the pan in a bowl of cold water.ย

ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย 3.ย  Add the Yogurt Starter

    • Once the milk is warm (not hot), stir in the 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt. Mix thoroughly to distribute the live cultures evenly.

ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย 4.ย  Incubate the Yogurt

    • Pour the mixture into a clean container with a lid.
    • Keep it warm and undisturbed for 6โ€“12 hours, depending on how tangy you want your yogurt. You can use a yogurt maker, an oven with the light on, or wrap the container in a towel and place it in a warm spot.

ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  5.ย  Check the Yogurt

    • After the incubation time, the milk should have thickened into yogurt. If itโ€™s not set, give it a couple more hours in the warm spot.

ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  6.ย  Chill and Serve

    • Refrigerate the yogurt for at least 2 hours to stop the fermentation process and improve its texture.
    • Enjoy plain or with your favorite toppings like fruits, nuts, or honey
